About Delmonico’s

Delmonico’s, opened in 1837 as America’s first fine dining restaurant, continues to serve the connoisseur of fine American food in its premier location at 56 Beaver Street, the heart of Manhattan’s financial district.

Birthplace of the Delmonico Steak, Delmonico Potatoes, Eggs Benedict, Lobster Newburg, and Baked Alaska, the original Delmonico’s offered unheard of luxury – the availability of private dining rooms, an extensive wine cellar, innovative cuisine, and, above all, warm, personal service!

Reviews

“I have patronized most of the restaurants in the Financial District since 2002 but somehow missed this historical gem. My boyfriend craved steak tonight, so we took advantage of Delmonico’s  Restaurant Week offer.

The decor looked expensive. The art on the wall looked privately, and appropriately, commissioned. It had an aristocratic feel with its dim lighting, book shelves, fire place, bird cage and wine cases. I did not expect it to be so fancy, so I quickly removed my denim jacket to reveal my nice dress underneath–not that it was necessary, as the host greeted us warmly.

For $35 a person, we had some savory options. I chose the lobster bisque, the filet mignon, and the chocolate cheesecake. My boyfriend selected the iceberg lettuce salad with blue cheese, the filet mignon as well, and the panna cotta with blueberries. We both loved everything we ate.

You know how some lobster bisques are so meaty, you ask, “What, did they put the whole lobster in here?” This isn’t one of those bisques, but the soup was delicious nonetheless. The assortment of breads entertained my taste buds until the main course arrived. If I had to complain about anything at all, I would have liked warm bread with butter at room temperature.

The 10 oz. filet mignon did not disappoint. Served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes and gravy, the chef slightly enhanced the dish with pieces of carrots and string beans.

I tasted the panna cotta–yummy–but the chocolate cheesecake drizzled with caramel made me cross-eyed, it tasted that good.

The establishment is simple and refined, and the service is friendly and attentive–surprising for an upscale establishment like this where one might expect a snooty staff. The waiter then noticed my boyfriend’s Slavic surname on the credit card and said, “Thank you,” in the language shared by the former Yugoslavia. Nice touch, that just secured a solid tip.” – Amy D (Yelp)

“We tried their Tasting Menu. It is wonderful! A very reasonible price of $55 for Oysters Diamond Jim Brady, Lobster Newburg, Salad, Delmonico steak, Creamed Spinach, Delmonico potatoes AND Baked Alaska! This place is great!” – Open Table review
